Sakkoons

Sakkoons are a fictional species of semi-aquatic mammals described in worldbuilding and speculative fiction. Endemic to the Sakkoon Archipelago, they inhabit coastal mangrove systems, river deltas, and estuarine forests. The name is derived from the archipelago's ancient language and is used in most sources to denote a versatile forager.

They are medium-sized, typically 45 to 60 cm in body length with a dense, water-repellent coat, webbed hind feet, and a strong, muscular tail used for propulsion. Forelimbs are robust and dexterous, enabling grasping branches and rocky ledges. Coloration ranges from olive-brown to gray, with lighter undersides for countershading.

Sakkoons are mainly nocturnal and solitary, though pairs may share ranges during the breeding season. Diet consists of aquatic plants, fruit, crustaceans, and small fish. They are adept at foraging along shallow waters and can dive briefly to harvest prey.

Reproduction occurs seasonally in the fictional account; females give birth to one or two altricial young after a gestation period of roughly three months. Juveniles remain with the parent for several months, learning foraging and climbing skills.

Taxonomically, in the fictional framework, Sakkoons are placed in the family Sakkoonidae and the order Carnivoriformes, though some authors debate their exact placement due to unusual morphological traits. Conservation status varies by source, with habitat loss cited as the main threat.
