SPDrelated refers to conditions, symptoms, and research connected with sensory processing difficulties. It is most commonly linked to sensory processing disorder (SPD), a term used in occupational therapy to describe difficulties in registering, modulating, or integrating sensory information from the body and environment. Sensory processing involves input from touch, movement, vision, hearing, taste, smell, and internal senses such as proprioception and vestibular input. When processing is atypical, individuals may respond strongly or weakly to sensory stimuli, which can affect daily activities, learning, and social interaction.

SPD-related concerns are frequently discussed in children and are often observed in association with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety, or developmental delays. The term “SPD-related” is commonly used in clinical notes and research to indicate symptoms or problems that pertain to sensory processing but may not by themselves constitute a formal diagnosis.

Assessment typically involves caregiver reports, clinical observation, and evaluations by occupational therapists using standardized sensory profiles and developmental assessments.

Management may include environmental adaptations, structured routines, sensory-based interventions, and the use of a “sensory diet” to support regulation. The evidence base is variable, with some studies suggesting benefits for certain populations, particularly autistic children, while others call for more rigorous trials.
