SNOCs

SNOCs are specialized facilities responsible for monitoring and controlling complex networks and assets. The term is used in several domains, with Satellite Network Operations Centers and Security Network Operations Centers being common variants. Regardless of the domain, SNOCs aim to maximize uptime, coordinate rapid fault resolution, and provide a central point of command for operational activities.

In satellite communications, a SNOC manages satellite health and payload operations, transponder allocation, and coordination with ground stations and mission control. It processes telemetry, issues telecommands, schedules maneuvers, and handles routine maintenance planning. TT&C systems form the core data link, complemented by automation, dashboards, and incident alerting to support real-time decision making.

In cybersecurity, a SNOC functions as a security-focused operations center, monitoring networks for threats, coordinating incident response, and enforcing security policies. It often operates alongside a Security Operations Center, sharing threat intelligence, security event data, and escalation procedures.

Organization and practices: SNOCs are typically staffed in shifts by engineers and operators who monitor dashboards, analyze alerts, and execute playbooks. Facilities rely on redundant networking, power, and data centers, with integrated telemetry pipelines, change management, and communications with external partners. Weather and space weather can affect satellite SNOCs, while threat feeds and ITIL-aligned processes guide cyber SNOCs.
