SMSviestit

SMSviestit refers to short text messages transmitted over mobile networks using the Short Message Service (SMS). In Finnish usage, the term SMS-viestit is commonly used to describe person-to-person messages as well as automated notifications sent by services and systems.

Technical background centers on how SMS messages are routed through mobile networks via an SMS Center (SMSC). Messages are encoded using the GSM-7 7-bit alphabet or, if needed, Unicode (UTF-16). A single GSM-7 SMS can carry up to 160 characters; messages longer than this are typically split into multiple linked segments (concatenated SMS). Unicode messages have a smaller per-segment capacity, which increases the number of required segments for longer text.

Delivery and costs depend on mobile operators. SMS delivery is not guaranteed and can be subject to delays, network outages, or filtering. Fees for sending SMS vary by operator and country, and international or premium messages may incur additional charges. SMS remains widely supported even on devices without internet access.

Common use cases include person-to-person communication, automated alerts, and especially two-factor authentication codes or transactional notifications. Businesses may use SMS for marketing or customer reminders, often subject to consent, timing restrictions, and regulatory compliance.

Security and privacy considerations are important: SMS is not end-to-end encrypted, and messages can be vulnerable to interception, SIM swaps, or phishing (smishing). In addition, sender IDs may be spoofed in some contexts, underscoring the need for caution when handling sensitive information via SMS.

Trends include continued use due to universal reach, alongside the growth of richer messaging protocols such as RCS and alternative channels provided by OTT apps. SMS systems remain a foundational, interoperable option for quick, widely deliverable messaging.
