SECIElement

SECIElement is a data structure used in knowledge management to represent a unit of SECI knowledge conversion within the framework developed by Nonaka and Takeuchi. SECI stands for Socialization, Externalization, Combination, and Internalization, the four modes through which tacit and explicit knowledge are transformed and shared in organizations.

A SECIElement typically includes fields such as a unique identifier, stage type (socialization, externalization, combination, or internalization), timestamp, participating actors, inputs and outputs, related artifacts, and provenance metadata. The design emphasizes serialization friendliness, with common representations in JSON or compatibility with graph-based storage to preserve relationships.

In practice, SECIElements are linked to form a directed graph of knowledge flow. This structure supports auditing, lineage tracking, and analytics on how knowledge moves through successive SECI steps. Implementations often expose references to predecessor and successor elements and to artifacts produced or consumed at each stage.

Common use cases include recording a team discussion (socialization), creating a conceptual model (externalization), merging sources into a unified artifact (combination), and translating knowledge into training or practice (internalization). Each example highlights inputs, artifacts, and participants associated with that SECI step.

Origin and status: The term SECIElement appears in some knowledge management toolkits and academic discussions as a descriptive data type rather than a formal standard.
