SBAScompatible

SBAScompatible is a term used to describe a GNSS (global navigation satellite system) capability that allows a receiver or navigation device to receive and utilize corrections and integrity information broadcast by a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS). SBAS improves positioning accuracy, integrity, and availability by transmitting satellite corrections and health data via geostationary satellites to user receivers. A device labeled SBAScompatible can process SBAS messages, apply the corrections to the primary GNSS solution (such as GPS, Galileo, or others), and expose integrity information to applications and users.

SBAS networks include WAAS in North America, EGNOS in Europe, GAGAN in India, and MSAS in Japan, among others. A product described as SBAScompatible typically supports one or more of these services, with options to enable or disable SBAS corrections depending on the region and operational requirements. In practice, SBAScompatibility means the receiver can acquire SBAS satellites, decode SBAS message types, and merge the corrections into the navigation solution. It may also provide SBAS integrity metrics, such as availability flags or satellite health indications, to software running on the device.

Use cases span aviation, surveying, maritime, and consumer navigation, especially where improved accuracy and integrity are important. While SBAS can enhance accuracy to sub-meter levels in favorable conditions, actual performance depends on signal geometry, atmospheric effects, and obstructions.
