Säteilynvaimennusmateriaali, commonly known as radiation shielding material, is a substance designed to reduce the passage of ionizing radiation. These materials are crucial in various applications where exposure to radiation poses a risk, such as nuclear power plants, medical imaging facilities, and space exploration. The effectiveness of a radiation shielding material depends on its composition and the type of radiation it is intended to block.

Different types of radiation, like alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiation, interact with matter in distinct ways. Alpha and beta particles are relatively low-energy and can be stopped by thin layers of dense materials. Gamma rays and X-rays, which are high-energy photons, require denser and thicker materials for effective attenuation. Neutron radiation, being electrically neutral, interacts differently and often necessitates materials rich in hydrogen or other light elements to slow them down, followed by materials that can absorb the slowed neutrons.

Common radiation shielding materials include lead, concrete, water, and specialized polymers. Lead is highly effective against gamma and X-rays due to its high atomic number and density. Concrete, a versatile and cost-effective option, provides good shielding against both gamma and neutron radiation, especially when formulated with specific aggregates. Water is an excellent moderator and absorber for neutrons and can also attenuate gamma rays. Borated polyethylene is frequently used for neutron shielding due to the presence of hydrogen and boron. The selection of a specific material or combination of materials is determined by the energy and intensity of the radiation source, as well as economic and structural considerations.
