Rückschnitts

Rückschnitt, literally “back cut,” is a pruning technique in horticulture that shortens shoots or branches to regulate size, form, and vigor. It also removes dead or diseased wood and stimulates new growth from the buds beneath the cut. Cuts are typically made back to a bud or to a side shoot.

Rückschnitt is related to, but distinct from, thinning cuts, which remove entire branches to reduce density,

Timing depends on the plant. Many deciduous shrubs are pruned during winter dormancy to minimize stress. Flowering

Technique: use clean, sharp tools and cut just above a bud facing the desired direction of growth.

Effect and caveats: Proper Rückschnitt promotes denser growth, better light penetration, and renewal of older plants.
