Rysäytykset refers to a traditional Finnish method of fishing, primarily used for catching salmon and other migratory fish in rivers. The term "rysäytys" literally translates to "crushing" or "slamming," which describes the forceful action involved in deploying the fishing gear. The technique relies on a large, heavy net, often constructed from sturdy twine or wire mesh, which is then deliberately and swiftly lowered or "slammed" into a specific point in the river where fish are known to congregate.

The success of rysäytykset depends on understanding the river's currents, the behavior of the target fish species, and the optimal placement for the net. Fishermen would often locate natural bottlenecks or areas where fish were funneled by the river's flow. The net, attached to a sturdy frame, is then dropped quickly to encircle and trap the fish.
