Rupturplader

Rupturplader, commonly known as rupture discs or burst discs, are non-reclosing safety devices used to protect pressure vessels and piping from overpressure. The device consists of a thin metal or composite diaphragm engineered to rupture at a predetermined relief pressure. When process pressure reaches the set point, the disc bursts, providing an unobstructed path for the contained fluid or gas to escape. After rupture, the disc cannot reseal and must be replaced; in many installations a backup relief device is used.

Materials and designs vary by application. Rupturplader are manufactured in a range of materials, including stainless steel, Inconel, bronze, or specialty polymers, and geometries such as flat, corrugated, or conical diaphragms. They may be classified by whether they produce fragments or remain intact on rupture; non-fragmenting discs minimize debris in the line, while fragmenting discs are chosen for configurations where fragments pose less risk of blockage.

Installation and maintenance: They are mounted at vessel outlets or in-line vents, in flanged or welded connections, with the vent path directed to a safe location. Correct sizing to match the system’s maximum expected pressure and potential flow is essential to prevent nuisance ruptures. Routine inspection and timely replacement after a rupture are part of safe operation.

Standards and testing: Rupturplader are manufactured to international standards and validated by burst tests. Common references include ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, API 520/521, and EN 764-series. They are often used where rapid relief is required or where resettable devices are impractical.
