Rugzijde

Rugzijde is a Dutch term that literally means the underside or back of a rug. It refers to the side that faces the floor and is usually not visible when the rug is in use. The rugzijde can differ in texture, color, and construction from the pile side.

In terms of construction, the rugzijde reveals the rug’s foundation. Handmade rugs typically have a visible warp and weft and may show knots or woven structure on the back, with the pile attached to the foundation. Machine-made rugs often have a backing fabric or a latex layer that stabilizes the pile and provides extra durability. The appearance of the underside can help distinguish between handmade and machine-made rugs, as machine-made backs are generally more uniform.

Materials used for the underside vary. Common backings include cotton or wool foundations, jute or other natural fibers, and synthetic backings or latex. The choice of backing influences durability, slip resistance, and moisture handling. Natural-fiber backs can absorb moisture and require careful drying to prevent mildew.

Care and maintenance considerations focus on the underside’s role in stability and hygiene. Some rugs feature a non-slip backing to reduce movement on smooth floors. Regular cleaning typically concentrates on the pile side, but the underside should be kept dry and free of excessive moisture. If cleaning the rug, follow manufacturer guidelines, avoid harsh solvents on the backing, and ensure thorough drying to prevent mold or damage.

Identification and quality assessment of a rug often involve inspecting the rugzijde for construction details, uniformity, and any irregularities that indicate handmade versus machine-made origins.
