Rudohorie

Rudohorie is a mountain range located in Central Slovakia, forming part of the larger Western Carpathians. The name "Rudohorie" translates to "Ore Mountains" in English, a testament to the region's historical significance in mining. The range is characterized by its rolling hills and forested slopes, with elevations generally ranging from 500 to 1000 meters above sea level. The highest peak is Volovec at 1,017 meters.

The geology of Rudohorie is primarily composed of ancient volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The landscape is dissected by numerous valleys and streams, contributing to its picturesque scenery. The climate is temperate, with distinct seasons, including warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The region is well-known for its biodiversity, hosting a variety of flora and fauna typical of Central European mountain forests. This includes various species of conifers and deciduous trees, as well as mammals like deer, wild boar, and smaller predators.

Historically, Rudohorie was a significant center for mining, particularly for iron ore, copper, and silver. Numerous small settlements and villages dot the landscape, many of which have roots in these mining activities. Agriculture, especially livestock farming, also plays a role in the local economy. Today, the area is also recognized for its natural beauty, attracting visitors for hiking, nature observation, and outdoor recreation. Protected landscape areas within Rudohorie aim to preserve its natural and cultural heritage.
