Ropeclipping

Ropeclipping is a term used in rock climbing and mountaineering to describe the act of a climber falling and becoming entangled with their climbing rope, specifically in a way that causes them to swing into a rock feature. This can occur when a climber falls past a piece of protection, such as a quickdraw or a cam, and the rope then passes through that protection, creating a pendulum effect. If the climber's trajectory during the swing brings them into contact with the rock face, they are said to have "ropeclipped."

The risk of ropeclipping is a consideration during route planning and climbing. Factors that can increase the likelihood include the distance of the fall, the angle of the rope relative to the rock, and the climber's body position. While often resulting in a jarring swing and potential for minor scrapes or bruises, severe consequences are rare. However, in extreme cases, a ropeclip could lead to more serious injuries if the climber impacts the rock with significant force or in a vulnerable position. Experienced climbers often employ techniques to minimize the risk, such as strategic placement of protection and body awareness during a fall. The term itself highlights the mechanical interaction between the rope, protection, and the rock.
