Roostervloer

Roostervloer is a Dutch term for a floor construction based on a system of supporting joists. The joists run parallel and span between load-bearing walls or beams, with a floor deck placed on top. The arrangement transfers loads from the floor surface to the supports and can create a cavity for services and insulation.

Traditionally roostervloeren are timber structures. Joists are spaced regularly and covered with floorboards or sheathing such as OSB or plywood, followed by insulation and the final floor finish. In modern construction, joists can be engineered timber such as LVL or I-joists, allowing longer spans and thinner walls. The space between joists can be vented or filled with insulation, depending on climate and performance requirements. The design also interacts with under-floor ventilation and moisture control.

Advantages include relative ease of installation, good load distribution for typical residential floors, and room for services. Limitations involve the risk of moisture-related deterioration of timber, creaking, and lower fire resistance without additional protection. Acoustic performance depends on joist spacing and the choice of underlay. Maintenance involves inspecting for rot, insect damage, and sagging; damaged joists can be replaced or reinforced, and joints tightened.

Roostervloer is commonly used in timber-framed buildings and can be paired with various finishing systems, from timber floorboards to gypsum boards and floor finishes. It contrasts with solid slab floors or concrete-formed systems, offering a lighter and potentially more economical alternative where appropriate.
