Roosevelts

The Roosevelts are an American political family of Dutch origin that produced two U.S. presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as strong dynastic influence in public life through figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt. The surname derives from the Dutch van Rooseveld, meaning rose field, and the family established a long-standing presence in New York and national affairs.

The family’s American lineage traces to Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt, who immigrated to New Netherland in the 17th century. Over generations, the Roosevelts built prominence in law, business, and politics, with several members serving in local and national roles and contributing to public service across generations.

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president (1901–1909), led the United States during a pivotal era of reform and expansion. He championed Progressive Era policies, including trust-busting, conservation, and consumer protections, and played a key role in shaping early 20th-century foreign policy. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the Russo-Japanese War.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president (1933–1945), guided the country through the Great Depression and World War II. His New Deal programs sought to redefine the scope of the federal government and provide social welfare and economic relief. He also helped lay the groundwork for postwar international institutions, including the United Nations.

Eleanor Roosevelt, his wife, served as a prominent First Lady, diplomat, and human rights advocate. She chaired U.N. committees and played a key role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Other Roosevelts—such as Elliott Roosevelt, James Roosevelt, and Kermit Roosevelt—participated in public service, exploration, and diplomacy, reinforcing the family’s lasting influence in American life.
