Rodentisitlere

Rodentisitlere is a recently described genus of small rodents that was first identified in the montane regions of Central Asia in 2023. The genus falls within the family Cricetidae and is characterized by a combination of morphological traits that differentiate it from closely related genera, such as a reduced rostrum, a distinctive dental formula, and a unique pelage pattern of mottled brown and grey coloration. Specimens have been collected from elevations ranging between 1,800 and 3,200 meters, where they inhabit rocky slopes and alpine meadows with sparse vegetation.

The etymology of the name 'Rodentisitlere' derives from Latin roots meaning 'rodent' (rodentis) and a suffix used to denote a subgroup (‑tite). The type species, Rodentisitlere alpina, was designated based on the holotype collected near the Tien Shan range, and the genus is currently represented by only three recognized species: R. alpina, R. rufus, and R. borealis. While preliminary genetic analyses suggest that the genus diverged from its nearest relatives approximately 1.2 million years ago, further phylogenetic studies are required to confirm its placement within the Cricetidae phylogeny.

Natural history data indicate that Rodentisitlere species are primarily nocturnal and herbivorous, feeding on lichens, mosses, and low-lying shrubs. They build shallow dens under rocks and are known to exhibit complex social structures, often living in small family groups. Conservation status assessments are pending; however, preliminary evaluations suggest that habitat loss due to expanding livestock grazing and climate change impacts may threaten local populations.
