Roboticseach is a coined term describing the autonomous search operations carried out by robotic systems to locate targets or collect information in uncertain or hazardous environments. It sits at the intersection of robotics, artificial intelligence, and search theory, emphasizing the integration of perception, localization and mapping, planning, and actuation to guide exploration and object retrieval.

Core components include perception, localization and mapping (SLAM), and planning and control. Perception processes sensor data to detect targets and estimate state. Localization and mapping build models of the environment, enabling robots to understand their position within it. Planning and control determine routes and actions, balancing efficiency, safety, and information gain.

Common methods involve frontier-based exploration, information-theoretic planning, and probabilistic frameworks such as POMDPs or Bayesian search. Algorithms such as A*, D* Lite, and sampling-based planners guide path selection, while sensor modalities include cameras, LiDAR, sonar, radar, and thermal imaging. When multiple robots participate, cooperative search and data fusion enable coordinated exploration.

Applications include search and rescue, disaster response, underwater and space exploration, environmental monitoring, and security or surveillance contexts, where human access is dangerous or impractical.

Key challenges include environmental uncertainty, dynamic changes, occlusion, energy constraints, limited communication, and ethical considerations around privacy and safety. The field continues to evolve with advances in sensing, artificial intelligence, and adaptive planning, aiming to improve robustness and success rates of autonomous search missions.
