Rivetingwelding is a fabrication approach that combines riveting and welding to join metal components. In this method, rivets are used to locate, align, and sometimes restrain parts, while welds provide a continuous load path and structural integrity. The technique can accommodate varying thicknesses or dissimilar metals and is useful when welding alone may cause excessive distortion, heat effects, or corrosion concerns.

Common layouts include rivet-first joints, where rivets are installed to secure parts and welding is applied along the joint interface for added strength, and weld-first joints, where a welded seam is complemented by rivets to resist joint opening and to improve fatigue performance. Hybrid arrangements may use stitched or rosette welds in conjunction with a rivet pattern to balance stiffness and redundancy.

Materials and design considerations focus on compatibility and durability. When combining rivets and welds, designers must address galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, differential thermal expansion, and heat-affected zone control. The choice of rivet material (steel, aluminum, or alloy variants) and weld process (MIG, TIG, or arc welding) should suit the base metals, thickness, and service conditions. Joint layout, alignment tolerances, and access for welding and riveting are critical.

Applications span aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and heavy equipment where the benefits of mechanical restraint and welded continuity are advantageous. Characteristics include improved redundancy, potential for joining dissimilar metals, and greater control of distortion, albeit with higher manufacturing cost and more complex inspection requirements. Non-destructive testing is typically used to verify both rivet integrity and weld quality.
