The family comprises a single genus, *Rivaria*, which includes only one known species, *Rivaria angustifolia*, commonly known as the **narrow-leaved rivaria**. This plant is native to the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico, where it grows in arid environments such as rocky slopes and desert flats.

The taxonomy of Rivariaceae has been debated, with some classifications placing it within the Rosaceae family due to shared morphological and molecular characteristics.
