They represent an object as if it were cut by a plane, revealing the internal structure that would otherwise be hidden. This type of projection is crucial for understanding the form and composition of complex parts, especially those with internal cavities, holes, or intricate arrangements of components.

The purpose of a ristlõikekujutis is to provide a clear and unambiguous depiction of the internal geometry. This is achieved by showing the shape of the object at the cutting plane, often with internal features that are not visible in external views. There are various types of cross-section views, including full sections, half sections, partial sections, and offset sections, each serving specific purposes depending on the complexity and symmetry of the object. Full sections show the entire object as if cut through its center. Half sections are used for symmetrical objects, showing one half in section and the other as an external view. Partial sections reveal internal details only in a specific area of interest. Offset sections are employed when the internal features do not lie in a single straight line.
