Ristipölytys is a Finnish term that translates to cross-pollination in English. It refers to the transfer of pollen from the stamen of one flower to the pistil of another flower. This process is essential for sexual reproduction in many flowering plants, leading to the fertilization of ovules and the subsequent development of seeds and fruits.

Cross-pollination can occur between different plants of the same species or, in some cases, between closely related species. The transfer of pollen is typically facilitated by external agents such as wind, water, insects, birds, or other animals. These agents are often attracted to flowers by visual cues like bright colors and scents, or by the presence of nectar, a sugary liquid.

The genetic diversity resulting from cross-pollination is significant. When pollen from one plant fertilizes the ovules of another, the offspring inherit genetic material from both parent plants. This mixing of genes can lead to plants with new combinations of traits, which can enhance their adaptability to changing environments, improve disease resistance, and contribute to the overall health and evolution of plant populations.

Conversely, self-pollination, where pollen from a flower fertilizes its own ovules or those of another flower on the same plant, results in less genetic variation.
