Ristipisto

Ristipisto, also known as cross-stitch, is a form of counted thread embroidery and a popular form of needlework. It is one of the oldest forms of embroidery, dating back to the Middle Ages. In cross-stitch, X-shaped stitches are used to form a simple, pixelated image. The stitches are made by bringing the needle up through one hole in the fabric and then down through another, creating the diagonal of the "X". Typically, a row of stitches is made in one direction, and then a second row is made in the opposite direction to complete the "X" shape.

Cross-stitch is usually worked on aida cloth, a fabric with a distinct, even weave that makes it easy to count the threads. Other evenweave fabrics can also be used. The pattern is created by following a chart, where different colored squares or symbols represent different thread colors. The embroiderer counts the squares on the chart and replicates them with stitches on the fabric.

The craft is used to create a wide variety of decorative items, including pictures, samplers, cushions, and clothing. It is a relatively simple technique to learn, making it accessible to beginners, yet it can also be used to create complex and detailed designs. The versatility and charm of cross-stitch have ensured its enduring popularity across many cultures.
