The term is used to describe high, narrow ridges that stand above adjacent valleys or lower relief, often forming a distinctive backbone-like pattern across a region. In Finnish geography, rinnemaasto describes how bedrock and erosional processes create persistent crests that influence drainage, microclimates, and vegetation.

Typical features of rinnemaastojen include elongated crests with relatively steep sides, a continuous or semi-continuous high ground, and intervening depressions or valleys.
