Ringnecks

Ringnecks refers to a group of birds belonging to the genus *Streptopelia*. These are typically medium-sized doves. A common characteristic of many ringneck species is a distinct band around the back of their neck, giving them their name.

The most well-known species is the Eurasian Collared-Dove (*Streptopelia decaocto*), often simply called the Collared Dove or Ringneck Dove. This species has expanded its range significantly in recent centuries and is now found across Europe, Asia, and parts of North America. Another common species is the Turtle Dove (*Streptopelia turtur*), also found in Europe and parts of Africa and Asia.

Ringneck doves are generally ground feeders, consuming seeds, grains, and sometimes berries. They are known for their gentle cooing sounds. In many cultures, these doves are seen as symbols of peace and fidelity, often kept as pets or released at weddings and other ceremonies. Their breeding habits are typically monogamous, with both parents sharing incubation and care of the young. Different species exhibit variations in plumage, size, and vocalizations, but the shared characteristic of a neck ring is a defining feature of the genus.
