Rhpositivt

Rhpositivt is a term used to denote Rh-positive blood status, indicating that red blood cells express the Rh(D) antigen. In English-language practice the equivalent term is Rh-positive or Rh+. The word appears in some non-English sources and may be encountered as Rhpositivt in Scandinavian or related language contexts.

Biologically, the Rh system comprises several antigens, with the D antigen being the most clinically significant. People whose red blood cells carry the D antigen are considered Rh-positive; those who lack it are Rh-negative. Typing is primarily done by serology using anti-D antibodies, though molecular methods can identify weak D variants and other Rh alleles that affect interpretation.

Clinically, Rh status influences blood transfusion decisions and pregnancy management. Transfusions are typically matched by Rh status to prevent alloimmunization; Rh-negative recipients are usually given Rh-negative blood unless special circumstances apply. In obstetrics, Rh incompatibility between an Rh-negative mother and an Rh-positive fetus can lead to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, a risk mitigated by Rh immune globulin prophylaxis administered during and after pregnancy.

Prevalence of Rh-positive status varies by population but is generally the majority across many regions, often around 85 percent or more in populations of European ancestry, with substantial variation elsewhere.
