Retropeegelduvust is the optical property of a surface to reflect light back toward its source rather than in many directions. The term is used particularly in Estonian to describe retroreflection, a feature that enhances visibility in low-light conditions.

Mechanisms and materials occur in several forms. The most common are glass-bead retroreflectors, where microscopic beads act as lenses to direct light back toward the source. Another major design uses cube-corner microprisms or microstructured prism arrays that redirect light with minimal deviation. All approaches share the fundamental principle: the geometry of the surface returns incident light toward the original direction of the light source, increasing perceived brightness from the viewer’s perspective.

Materials and forms include retroreflective sheets and tapes, often embedded in signage, road markings, or safety garments. These can be produced as flat sheets, laminated fabrics, or integrated into coatings, providing varying levels of abrasion resistance and weatherability. Some systems combine retroreflective elements with pigments or dyes to balance visibility with color.

Standards and measurement focus on performance. The retroreflection coefficient, commonly denoted R, is measured under standardized illumination and observation geometries using photometric equipment. Higher R-values indicate brighter retroreflection at a given distance and angle. Durability considerations include exposure to abrasion, dirt accumulation, UV radiation, and cleaning routines.

Applications span road safety and personal protection. Road signs, lane markings, vehicle and bicycle reflectors, and high-visibility clothing rely on retroreflection to improve nighttime conspicuity. In addition, retroreflective materials are used in aviation, maritime signage, and outdoor gear.
