Retningarnas

Retningarnas is a coastal archipelago and cultural region in the northern part of Nordmark, a fictional Nordic federation. It comprises twelve main islands and numerous islets, with most residents concentrated on the southern shores. The name derives from retning, meaning direction or bearing, reflecting its historic role as a navigation reference for seafarers and traders.

Geography features rocky coastlines, conifer forests, and intertidal flats, with numerous harbors and inlets. The climate is subarctic maritime, with cool summers and mild winters. The surrounding sea supports fisheries, shellfish farming, and modest renewable energy installations.

Human presence dates to the early Iron Age, with fishing and salt production at the economic core of the islands' communities. In the medieval era, Retningarnas served as a waypoint for regional trade and as a defensive outpost. It joined the Nordmark federation in the later medieval period and won limited regional autonomy in the late 20th century.

Governance is carried out by a regional council elected by residents, coordinating with Nordmark authorities. The economy centers on small-scale fishing, aquaculture, maritime services, and forestry, with growing seasonal tourism. Renewable energy projects, notably wind and tidal power, contribute to local employment.

Culture blends island dialects with Nordmarkic influence. Local cuisine emphasizes smoked fish, seaweed dishes, and rye bread. Annual events include a midsummer festival and a winter market. The population is small and aging, with public services administered in cooperation with Nordmark.

Notable sites include the Lighthouse of Varden, the Old Harbor of Havn, and the Stone Circle of Eld. Transport relies on ferries and bridge links to the mainland, supplemented by small air connections for emergency and tourism travel.
