Restfugen

Restfugen is a German term used in architecture, civil engineering and related trades to describe joints that are left as residual or deliberate gaps within construction assemblies. The word combines “Fuge” (joint) with “Rest” (remainder, residual), reflecting their function as spaces that accommodate tolerance, movement or future finishing work. The concept is regionally used in German-speaking contexts and may have slightly different nuances depending on the discipline.

In practice, Restfugen appear in several contexts. In masonry and prefabricated concrete assemblies, small gaps may be left between elements to absorb dimensional changes from temperature and moisture or to simplify alignment during construction. In timber construction or historic masonry restoration, gaps are sometimes retained or reintroduced to allow for swelling, shrinkage or seasonal movement without inducing cracking. In tiling and stone work, residual joints can be specified to provide space for sealants, drainage, or to accommodate movement without compromising the structural system. Restfugen are generally designed to be compatible with adjacent materials and may later be filled, glazed, or sealed as part of ongoing maintenance.

Design and maintenance considerations include the chosen width and depth of the joints, material compatibility between filler or sealant and surrounding elements, and the long-term behavior under weathering and load. Restfugen are often coordinated with expansion joints (Dehnungsfugen) and regular detailing to ensure durability and performance of the build.
