Restaurointihistorian, or the history of restoration, is a field of study that examines the evolution of approaches, techniques, and philosophies concerning the preservation and repair of historical artifacts, buildings, and artworks. It traces how societies have viewed and interacted with their past material culture over time, from early interventions driven by aesthetic preferences or functional needs to the more scientifically informed and ethically grounded methods of today.

Early forms of restoration often involved significant reconstruction or even replacement of damaged elements, with a focus on returning an object or structure to an idealized former state, sometimes perceived rather than historically accurate. The Renaissance and Baroque periods saw notable examples of this, often driven by a desire to enhance or complete existing works. The 19th century marked a significant shift with the rise of architectural restoration. Figures like Eugène Viollet-le-Duc advocated for a highly interventionist approach, aiming to restore buildings to a perceived perfect, often romanticized, original state, even adding elements that may never have existed. This sparked considerable debate and led to more conservative viewpoints.

In contrast, John Ruskin championed a philosophy of minimal intervention, arguing that decay was a part of an object's history and should be respected. The early 20th century witnessed a growing emphasis on scientific analysis and documentation, moving towards a more objective understanding of materials and deterioration processes. Cesare Brandi's theories in the mid-20th century introduced the concept of "the work of art as a historical document," emphasizing the importance of preserving the original materials and the traces of its history, advocating for interventions that are distinguishable from the original but integrate harmoniously. Modern restoration continues to build on these foundations, prioritizing ethical considerations, reversibility of treatments, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
