Residuaalijännitteiden

Residuaalijännitteiden, or residual stresses, are stresses that remain within a material or component after the original and/or external forces have been removed. These internal stresses can arise from a variety of manufacturing processes, including welding, casting, machining, heat treatment, and plastic deformation. Even without applied external loads, these stresses are present and can significantly influence the material's mechanical behavior and structural integrity.

The origin of residual stresses can be broadly categorized into thermal and mechanical effects. Thermal stresses develop due to non-uniform temperature distributions during processes like cooling from high temperatures. When different parts of a material cool at different rates, they expand or contract at different times, leading to internal forces. Mechanical stresses, on the other hand, are often a result of plastic deformation where the material has been permanently altered. For example, shot peening intentionally introduces compressive residual stresses on a surface to improve fatigue life.

The presence of residual stresses can have both detrimental and beneficial effects. Detrimental effects include the increased likelihood of stress corrosion cracking, fatigue failure, and distortion. Tensile residual stresses can exacerbate applied stresses, leading to premature failure. Conversely, carefully introduced compressive residual stresses can enhance a component's resistance to fatigue and crack propagation, thereby extending its service life. Understanding and controlling residual stresses is therefore crucial in engineering design and manufacturing to ensure the safety and reliability of structures and components. Various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and ultrasonic methods, are used to measure and analyze residual stress distributions.
