Reparameteriseerimise

Reparameteriseerimise, often translated as reparameterization, is a technique used in various fields, notably in mathematics and machine learning, to change the way a model or a system is described. Instead of directly working with the original parameters, reparameterization introduces new, auxiliary variables that are related to the original ones through a deterministic function. This transformation can often simplify complex dependencies or introduce desirable properties into the system.

A key motivation for reparameterization is to enable the use of gradient-based optimization methods in situations where gradients are otherwise intractable. For example, in probabilistic modeling, if a model's parameters are sampled from a distribution whose parameters are themselves learned, directly differentiating through the sampling process can be impossible. By reparameterizing the sampling, such as using the reparameterization trick for the Normal distribution, the randomness can be moved outside the parameters being optimized, allowing gradients to flow through.

In machine learning, reparameterization is crucial for training generative models like Variational Autoencoders (VAEs). VAEs use a latent space to represent data. Reparameterizing the sampling of latent variables from their approximate posterior distribution allows the encoder's parameters to be updated using backpropagation. This technique facilitates the efficient learning of complex data distributions by making the optimization process more stable and effective. The underlying principle is to decouple the source of randomness from the parameters that need to be optimized, thereby making them differentiable.
