Relationalpointing

Relationalpointing is a communicative concept describing acts where a speaker conveys referential intention by signaling a relationship among entities rather than pointing to a single object. The term is used across linguistics, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction to study how speakers encode relational information through gestures, gaze, and language.

Mechanisms of relationalpointing include gestures (hand shapes, trajectories), eye gaze, and accompanying linguistic cues such as “the cup on the left of the plate” or “the taller one.” It often relies on shared context and common ground; it can disambiguate references in complex scenes. In human-robot interaction, relationalpointing can guide a robot to identify a target not by location but by its relation to others (for example, “pick up the object next to the green bottle”).

Studies and applications of relationalpointing appear in child language acquisition to understand how children interpret relational cues, in multi-agent communication protocols, and in interface design for search and retrieval tasks. It intersects with deictic pointing but emphasizes relational rather than deictic reference.

Limitations and challenges include a high reliance on context, potential ambiguity in crowded scenes, and cross-cultural differences in gesture interpretation, as well as variability across individuals. Ongoing research seeks to formalize relationalpointing using spatial relations grammars and probabilistic models to improve interpretability and robustness in real-world communication tasks.
