Its primary function is to acquire, manage, and maintain all the objects or "props" that actors interact with or that are used to furnish a set. This includes everything from furniture and decorative items to small handheld objects like books, weapons, or food.

The department is typically led by a Head of Props, who oversees a team of prop masters and assistants. Their responsibilities begin early in pre-production, where they collaborate with the director, set designer, and costume designer to understand the specific needs of the production. They then source these items, which can involve purchasing new, renting from specialized suppliers, or even crafting custom pieces.

During filming or performance, the prop department ensures that all props are present, in good condition, and placed correctly for each scene. They are responsible for the continuity of props, making sure an item appears the same from shot to shot or scene to scene. This meticulous attention to detail is vital for maintaining the illusion and credibility of the fictional world being presented.
