Reifenselektion

Reifenselektion, literally “maturation selection,” is a term used in several biological disciplines to describe the selective process that acts on organisms, cells, or lineages based on traits that become evident during maturation or at later life stages. The exact meaning varies by field, and there is no single, universally accepted definition.

In plant and animal breeding, Reifenselektion commonly refers to selecting individuals for traits that manifest as they reach maturity. Examples include fruit ripening time, storage stability, growth performance up to maturity, and reproductive traits. The selection is typically followed by propagation of superior lines and evaluation in multi-year trials to confirm stability across environments.

In cell biology and immunology, the concept can denote selection events tied to maturation processes. However, standard German terminology in immunology uses terms such as positive Selektion and negative Selektion to describe thymic selection of T cells; Reifenselektion is less common and, when used, generally references maturation-associated filtering rather than initial development.

In microbiology or fermentation contexts, Reifenselektion may describe selecting strains that exhibit desired mature phenotypes, such as higher product yield or stability after a maturation phase of the culture.

Implementation of Reifenselektion often relies on phenotype-based screening, long-term performance testing, and, in modern programs, genomic or marker-assisted selection to predict maturation-related traits.
