Regenschutz

Regenschutz is a German term describing measures, materials, or technologies that prevent rain from reaching a protected object or person. The concept is applied in clothing and outdoor gear, electronics, and building design, where reliable rain protection is essential for function and comfort.

In apparel, Regenschutz is achieved with waterproof or water-resistant fabrics, membranes, and sealed seams. Common technologies include polyurethane coatings, laminated membranes (such as ePTFE), and taped seams. Breathability is often balanced with waterproofness to allow moisture vapor to escape. Typical products include rain jackets, rain pants, and ponchos. Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments shed water and may require reapplication after washing or wear.

For equipment and gear, Regenschutz covers rain covers for backpacks, waterproof cases and bags, and protective housings for electronics. Closures, zippers, and seams are frequently sealed or taped to minimize leakage.

In architecture and infrastructure, Regenschutz refers to systems and details that keep rain out of interiors while allowing ventilation. Examples include overhangs, rain screens, weather barriers, and well-sealed joints around openings.

Assessment and maintenance: water resistance is described by hydrostatic head for fabrics or IP ratings for devices; tests include hydrostatic pressure tests and spray tests. Maintenance includes cleaning, reproofing with DWR, and proper storage to preserve performance.

Regenschutz is a broad concept that combines material science, design, and maintenance to keep people and objects dry in wet conditions.
