Refiex

Refiex is a term used to describe fast, reflex-like control mechanisms in autonomous systems that couple perceptual input to immediate motor actions through a lightweight decision layer. In refiex architectures, responses are designed to have ultra-low latency, often measured in tens of milliseconds, and to operate under high uncertainty where deliberative planning is impractical. The concept is presented as a bridge between hard-wired reflexes and learned, model-based control.

Origins and usage: The word is a neologism appearing in scholarly papers, project briefs, and industry blogs since the late 2010s. There is no single canonical definition, and authors use refiex to refer to slightly different ideas—such as reactive control loops augmented by small neural networks or policy-driven reflexes with safety overrides. Typically, refiex is described as a specialized component within a larger control system rather than a standalone platform.

Architecture and characteristics: A refiex subsystem usually includes a perception front end, a compact reflex policy, and a safety layer enforcing physical limits. The policy maps high-rate sensor states to actions with minimal computation, while slower planners can adjust behavior or override the reflex when necessary.
