Reeglitepõhist

Reeglitepõhist, also known as "reeglitop" or "reeglitopõhist" in some regional dialects, refers to a traditional Estonian term that translates roughly to "reed-covered" or "reed-matted." It is primarily associated with the construction of small, temporary shelters or huts made from natural materials, commonly found in rural and coastal areas of Estonia.

These structures were historically built by Estonian farmers and fishermen as seasonal dwellings, particularly during the summer months. The huts were constructed using a framework of wooden poles or branches, which were then covered with layers of reeds, moss, and sometimes clay to provide insulation and weather resistance. The materials were readily available in Estonia’s wetlands and forests, making reed an ideal choice for construction.

Reeglitepõhist huts were often used for storage, shelter during work, or as temporary living spaces. They were particularly common in areas where permanent housing was scarce or where seasonal labor required mobility.
