Rebaseoperationen

Rebaseoperationen, often shortened to rebase, is a command in version control systems like Git used to integrate changes from one branch into another. Unlike a merge, which creates a new commit to combine histories, rebase rewrites the commit history of the source branch. This is achieved by finding the common ancestor of the two branches, then reapplying each commit from the source branch, one by one, onto the tip of the target branch. The effect is a linear history, making it appear as if the changes were made sequentially.

The primary benefit of rebasing is a cleaner, more linear commit log. This can make it easier to understand the progression of a project and to identify specific changes. However, rebasing rewrites history, which can be problematic if the branch being rebased has already been shared with others. If multiple people are working on the same branch, rebasing can cause confusion and conflicts because their local histories will no longer match the rewritten remote history. It is generally advised to only rebase local, unpushed branches.

When conflicts arise during a rebase, the user must resolve them manually for each commit that conflicts. This process involves editing the conflicting files and then continuing the rebase operation. While rebase can lead to a cleaner history, it requires a good understanding of Git and careful consideration of when and how to use it to avoid disrupting team workflows.
