Reaktiivivärjäys is a dyeing technique used primarily for cellulosic fibers like cotton, linen, and rayon, as well as some protein fibers like silk and wool. It involves a chemical reaction between the dye molecule and the fiber molecule, creating a strong, permanent bond. This process results in dyes that are known for their excellent wash fastness and brightness.

The dyes used in reaktiivivärjäys contain a reactive group that can form a covalent bond with the hydroxyl groups in cellulose or amino groups in protein fibers. Common types of reactive groups include vinyl sulfone and monochlorotriazine. The dyeing process typically occurs in an alkaline medium, which activates the fiber's hydroxyl groups, making them more susceptible to reaction with the dye.

Reaktiivivärjäys can be carried out using various methods, including exhaust dyeing, continuous dyeing, and printing. Exhaust dyeing involves immersing the fabric in a dye bath, while continuous dyeing processes move the fabric through a series of dye and fixing baths. Printing with reactive dyes allows for intricate patterns to be applied to the fabric.
