Reagís

Reagís is a Portuguese verb form that represents the second-person plural present indicative of the verb reagir (to react). It is used with the subject pronoun vós and corresponds to the English “you all react.” In contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, this form is not commonly used; instead, vocês reagem is the standard second-person plural present. Reagís remains attested primarily in European Portuguese, in historical texts, or in formal registers that preserve older orthographic and grammatical practices.

Etymology and form. The verb reagir is formed from the prefix re- (often conveying a sense of response or repetition) combined with agir (to act). The form reagís inherits the regular Portuguese verb paradigm for -ir verbs in the vós form. The accent on í marks the stress on the final syllable, a feature that helps distinguish it from other person-number forms of reagir in past or hypothetical tenses.

Usage. Reagís appears mainly in literary, religious, or ceremonial contexts, and in instructional materials that teach traditional forms of Portuguese. In everyday speech and modern writing in many dialects, speakers typically use vós reagís only in regions or communities that retain archaic forms, or switch to vocês reagem in the present indicative. When addressing a group in formal written Portuguese, other constructions may be preferred to avoid archaic forms.
