Rasitusväsymystä, known in English as overtraining syndrome, is a condition that arises from excessive exercise without adequate rest and recovery. It affects athletes and individuals engaged in rigorous physical training, leading to a decline in performance rather than improvement. The syndrome is characterized by a complex interplay of physiological and psychological symptoms.

Physiological manifestations can include persistent fatigue, muscle soreness that doesn't resolve, decreased strength and endurance, and an increased susceptibility to infections and injuries. Athletes may also experience disruptions in sleep patterns, changes in appetite, and hormonal imbalances. Psychologically, individuals might report mood disturbances such as irritability, depression, and a loss of motivation for training. Concentration and cognitive function can also be impaired.

The exact mechanisms behind rasitusväsymystä are not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a prolonged state of catabolism (tissue breakdown) that the body cannot adequately repair. This can be due to insufficient energy intake, inadequate sleep, high training volume or intensity, and insufficient rest periods between training sessions. Genetic predisposition and psychological stress may also play a role.

Diagnosis of rasitusväsymystä is typically made based on the athlete's history, symptoms, and performance decline, as there are no specific biomarkers. Treatment involves a significant reduction or complete cessation of training to allow the body to recover. Gradually reintroducing exercise at a lower intensity and volume, along with ensuring adequate nutrition, hydration, and sleep, is crucial for recovery. Prevention is key and involves carefully planned training programs that incorporate sufficient rest and recovery periods, paying attention to individual responses to training, and managing psychological stress.
