Ranguemont

Ranguemont is a small commune located in the Haute-Savoie department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. The commune covers an area of 12.5 square kilometres and lies at an elevation ranging from 520 to 1,450 metres above sea level, overlooking the valleys of the Arve and the Fier rivers. Its geographical coordinates are 46.223°N latitude and 6.753°E longitude. Ranguemont borders the communes of Frontenex to the north, Le Bourget-du-Lac to the east, and Isère to the west.

The history of Ranguemont dates back to the 12th century, when the first documented settlement was established by the local lords of the Montfort family. The remains of a Romanesque chapel, built in the 13th century, are a notable historical landmark, as is the 16th‑century chateau that now serves as a community centre and occasional venue for cultural events. Throughout the Middle Ages, the village was primarily engaged in pastoral farming and timber extraction from the surrounding alpine forests.

In modern times, the economy of Ranguemont has diversified to include artisanal cheese production, particularly a local variant of Gruyère named “Ranguemont”, and small-scale tourism focused on hiking, cross‑country skiing, and heritage walks. The village hosts an annual festival in August, celebrating local crafts, music, and regional gastronomy. According to the 2017 census, the commune had a population of 1,210 residents, with a demographic distribution that reflects a blend of young families and retirees drawn by the rural charm.
