Intercommunal is an English adjective describing activities, relations, or structures that involve more than one community, typically defined by locality, ethnicity, religion, or nationality. The term derives from Latin inter- meaning between and communalis meaning belonging to a community, and is widely used in sociology, political science, and urban governance.

In municipal governance, intercommunal refers to cooperation between neighboring municipalities. Many European countries have formal intercommunal arrangements—for example, France’s intercommunalité structures allow communes to pool resources and deliver shared services such as waste management, public transport, and urban planning. Similar concepts exist under different names in other countries, such as intermunicipal or intercommunal associations that coordinate services across borders or districts.

In social and political contexts, intercommunal describes relations among different communities within a state. Intercommunalism or intercommunal violence refers to conflict, tension, or collaboration across community lines, often along ethnic, religious, or linguistic lines. Researchers study intercommunal relations to understand social cohesion, integration policies, and conflict dynamics, and to design dialogue, reconciliation, and peace-building initiatives.

Challenges include coordinating across diverse interests, resource disparities, and political representation. Effective intercommunal arrangements typically rely on clear legal frameworks, inclusive governance, and mechanisms for conflict resolution.
