Rangierpraxis
Rangierpraxis refers to the set of techniques and procedures used to move and rearrange railway rolling stock within yards, sidings, and terminal facilities. It encompasses the planning, coordination, and execution of shunting movements necessary to form or detach trains, stage wagons for loading or unloading, and position cars for onward trains. The work is performed by shunters or yard crews using shunting locomotives or multiple units, often under the supervision of a Rangierführer or yardmaster.
Typical tasks include moving individual wagons between tracks, coupling and uncoupling cars, connecting and testing braking
Equipment and methods vary, but modern practice relies on dedicated shunting locomotives, air-brake systems, and standardized
The term Rangierpraxis is most common in German-speaking railway contexts, but the underlying concepts are shared
