Rammesystem

Rammesystem, in architecture and structural engineering, refers to a skeletal framework consisting of load-bearing frames—vertical columns and horizontal beams—that forms the main structural skeleton of a building or machine. The frame carries gravity loads and, together with braces or shear elements, resists lateral forces such as wind and earthquakes. The infill walls or panels are often independent of the frame, though they may connect to it.

Frames may be made of timber, steel, reinforced concrete, or composites. Joints can be rigid, semi-rigid, or pin-connected, influencing how bending moments are distributed. Many rammesystem are prefabricated and assembled on site, enabling modular design and faster construction. Common variants include rigid frame systems, braced frame systems, and portal or tower frames; space frames use a three-dimensional arrangement of members for high stiffness.

Advantages of rammesystem include open interior space, flexibility for changes in use, and efficient load transfer. Limitations include design complexity for lateral loads, potential for larger columns in certain configurations, and the need for careful detailing of connections and fire resistance.

In practice, rammesystem are chosen to suit architectural form, performance requirements, and construction methods, integrating with infill elements, façades, and mechanical services. They are used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, and also in some machinery housings and equipment frames.
