Rahautomaattien, commonly known as ATMs, are electronic banking devices that allow customers to complete basic transactions without the need for a bank teller. These transactions typically include cash withdrawals, balance inquiries, fund transfers, and sometimes even bill payments. ATMs are a ubiquitous feature of modern financial infrastructure, providing 24/7 access to banking services.

The first ATM was installed in 1967 in London by Barclays Bank. Early models were more rudimentary, often dispensing cash through vouchers that could be redeemed later. Modern ATMs are sophisticated machines that use a combination of hardware and software to process transactions securely. Users typically insert a debit or credit card and authenticate themselves with a personal identification number (PIN).

The widespread adoption of ATMs has significantly changed banking habits, reducing the need for in-person visits to branches for routine transactions. This convenience has been a major driver of their global proliferation. However, ATMs also present security risks, such as card skimming and physical theft, leading to ongoing development of more advanced security features.
