The concept encompasses a broad spectrum of methods, including direct lending, equity financing, grants, bonds, securitized products, and public‑private partnerships. It is widely used in economics, public policy and development studies to analyze how resources are mobilized and distributed in diversified markets.

In private finance the primary mechanisms are bank loans, venture‑capital agreements, and debt‑and‑equity conversions. These instruments provide liquidity while imposing contractual obligations on the borrower, such as repayment schedules and collateral requirements. In public finance, funding mechanisms often involve budget allocations, tax‑based revenue streams, social insurance contributions, and earmarked budget instruments. Grants and subsidies are commonly used to address market failures, encouraging research and development or addressing environmental externalities.

Pension and insurance funds have their own internal mechanisms: asset‑allocation strategies that balance short‑term liquidity against long‑term growth targets, often structured around diversified portfolios of equities, bonds, and real‑estate assets.
