Equity crowdfunding involves investors receiving shares or ownership in the company or project they are funding. Finally, debt-based crowdfunding, also known as peer-to-peer lending, allows individuals or businesses to borrow money directly from a crowd of lenders, who are repaid with interest.

Crowdfunding platforms act as intermediaries, connecting project creators with potential funders. These platforms handle payment processing, provide tools for campaign management, and facilitate communication between the parties. Projects typically launch with a funding goal and a deadline. If the goal is met within the timeframe, the funds are released to the creator. If not, the funds are often returned to the backers, depending on the platform's rules.

The benefits of crowdfunding include access to capital for individuals and small businesses, market validation for new ideas, and community building around a project. However, it also presents challenges such as the difficulty of reaching funding goals, potential for fraud, and the commitment required to manage a campaign and fulfill rewards.
