Raaputtamiskokeet

Raaputtamiskokeet, a Finnish term translating to "scratch tests," refers to a diagnostic procedure used to assess an individual's allergic reaction to various substances. This method involves introducing small amounts of suspected allergens to the surface of the skin, typically the forearm or back, and then observing for any localized skin reactions.

The procedure is generally performed by a healthcare professional, such as an allergist or dermatologist. A tiny prick or scratch is made on the skin's surface, and a diluted solution of the allergen is applied to this exposed area. Common allergens tested include pollens, dust mites, animal dander, certain foods, and insect venom. The skin is then monitored for a specific period, usually 15 to 20 minutes, for the development of a wheal and flare reaction.

A positive reaction is characterized by the appearance of a raised, red, and itchy bump (wheal) surrounded by a red area (flare). The size and intensity of this reaction indicate the degree of sensitivity to the specific allergen. Negative results show no significant skin changes. Raaputtamiskokeet are a widely used and generally safe method for identifying immediate hypersensitivity reactions, forming a crucial part of an allergy diagnosis.
