RPDs

RPDs most commonly refer to the Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova, a Soviet light machine gun developed by the Degtyaryov design bureau and widely used in the Cold War period. Designed to provide infantry-level automatic fire, the weapon was produced from the late 1940s onward and saw service with the Soviet Army and numerous allied forces. Its relatively simple construction and robust operation contributed to its popularity in various climates and theatres.

In terms of design, the RPD is a gas-operated, air-cooled automatic firearm chambered for 7.62×39mm. It is fed from a detachable box magazine and is intended to be a portable, squad-level support weapon. The weapon features a straightforward, rugged layout that facilitated field maintenance, and it was commonly issued with a bipod and a wooden stock. The RPD was produced in large numbers and, in addition to Soviet manufacture, was built under license or in copy forms by several allied states during the Cold War.

Operational history and impact: The RPD served as a standard light machine gun for the Soviet armed forces and was supplied to various Warsaw Pact and allied countries. It remained in frontline or secondary roles for several decades, gradually being supplanted by newer designs such as the PK family, though it continued to appear in conflicts and in paramilitary use where older equipment persisted.
